About Us

Mboho Akwa Ibom State Association (MAISA) UK & Ireland

is a non-profit, community-driven organization representing people of Akwa Ibom origin living in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland.

Founded in 1989 in London as the Akwa Ibom State Community in the UK & Ireland and formally renamed in 1998, MAISA stands as a beacon of unity, culture, and progress for Akwa Ibom indigenes abroad. Our association draws membership from the 31 local government areas and 3 senatorial districts of Akwa Ibom State — bound together by a shared heritage, mutual support, and collective ambition.

We are more than just an association — we are a family dedicated to preserving our roots while empowering our members to thrive in the diaspora.

About Akwa Ibom State

The Land of Promise

Akwa Ibom State is fondly called the “Land of Promise.” Located in the heart of Nigeria’s coastal South-South region, it was created on September 23, 1987 — carved out of the old Cross River State.

Rich in Culture and Heritage

Akwa Ibom is home to three major ethnic groups — Ibibio, Annang, and Oron, along with several smaller but equally vibrant communities like Eket, Ibeno, and Okobo.

Culinary Capital of Nigeria

Our state is widely known as the culinary heart of Nigeria! From the famous Afang Soup, Edikang Ikong, and Ate Affia, to fresh seafood from the Atlantic coast.

Cradle of Hospitality

Akwa Ibom people are known nationwide for their warmth and hospitality — a reflection of our cultural belief in unity, respect, and generosity. It’s no surprise that many call our state “home away from home.”

The First “Oil Producing” State in Nigeria

Akwa Ibom is one of Nigeria’s leading oil and gas producing states, contributing significantly to the nation’s economy — yet still rich in untapped agricultural and tourism potential.

The Rhythms of Akwa Ibom

Our music and dance — from Ekombi to Ndok Ufok Ebe — tell stories of love, strength, and community. The traditional Ekpo masquerade and Nsibidi symbols represent centuries of creativity and spirituality.
